Welcome!

We’re Washington Station Women's Institute, a friendly group for women that offers friendship, learning and fun. We are based in Washington in the North East of England and our members come together at our monthly meetings and other events. We now have around 50 members and are still growing! We are closely linked to our sister WI's in the Tyne and Wear South Federation, and work closely with the National Women's Institute to ensure our activities and efforts align with the national agenda.

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where does the Washington Station Women's Institute meet, and how often?

We meet on the third Tuesday of every month at The Life House, Grasmere Terrace, Washington, NE38 7LP. The meeting starts at 18.45 and we usually close by 20.30-20.45.

What happens at the monthly meetings?

After a warm welcome, we check you in at registration at the door, then you can find a seat, sometimes around tables, or if there is a speaker, seats are set out in rows. You can call along to the Treasury desk to buy your raffle tickets, and see if there are any events or outings that you'd like to put your name down for.

The President welcomes us and we sing Jerusalem together, and recite our Collect (we'll give you the words, don't worry!)

The President then reflects on the last meeting and asks for any views before relaying, with the Secretary, any business items and National WI topics. Our Programme Manager updates on upcoming events, and then we have a short coffee and refreshment break.

After that, it's over to our speaker or the hosted activity. You will find details of these on our Events page.

How much does it cost to attend?

Our annual subscription is £48 which includes access to all 11 monthly meetings, and other activities. Find out about more benefits you receive when you join us.

If you want to try us first, we welcome visitors and suggest a £5 donation meeting. You can come along as a visitor for up to three meetings, and then you can decide whether you'd like to join or not.

Is there an age range?

We welcome women from all age ranges (over 18) and backgrounds. Whether you're working or retired, into careers or crafts, everyone is welcome.

You'll notice a lovely mix of people and a very friendly atmosphere. Some of our members have amazing hobbies or passions and take up speaker slots at our monthly meetings.

What will I do on my first visit?

We're very relaxed, so don't worry, you won't be asked to introduce yourself or anything like that! We'll welcome you when you arrive and settle you onto a table with other members . We'll welcome any visitors or new members when we start the meeting.

Do I need to get involved in all events?

A great thing about the WI is that your involvement is up to you. Some members come to our monthly meetings and that's it. Other members come to more events and some come to all! The choice is yours.

I want to come along! What do I do?

We'd love to see you! Please drop us a line at washingtonstation.wi32@gmail.com and we'll be in touch. More details are on our Latest News and Events pages.
